Southeast Asian

The term "Southeast Asian" refers to the people, cultures, and languages originating from the subregion of Asia situated south of China, east of the Indian subcontinent, and northwest of Australia. This region encompasses eleven countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar (Burma), the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Timor-Leste, and Vietnam. While the diverse cultures of this area have interacted for centuries, the specific geopolitical designation of "Southeast Asia" gained global prominence during World War II with the formation of the Allied South East Asia Command, and was later solidified during the Cold War and the establishment of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

From a linguistic and social perspective, the term is widely considered acceptable and is the standard demographic category for the region. However, nuances arise regarding specificity and representation. Many within the diaspora embrace the term to distinguish their unique historical and cultural experiences from the dominant narratives of East Asia (such as China, Japan, and Korea) and South Asia (such as India and Pakistan). Conversely, some argue that the label is too monolithic, obscuring the vast religious, linguistic, and socioeconomic differences between the comprised nations—for example, grouping the experience of a refugee from the Vietnam War era with that of an expatriate from Singapore. Generally, while "Southeast Asian" is appropriate for regional discussions, it is often preferred to use specific national identities (e.g., "Thai," "Filipino," "Hmong") when referring to individuals.
