The term "social justice warrior" (often abbreviated as SJW) describes an individual who promotes socially progressive views, particularly regarding feminism, civil rights, multiculturalism, and identity politics. While the phrase appeared in the late 20th century as a neutral or even complimentary descriptor for activists, its connotation shifted drastically in the early 2010s. During internet controversies such as Gamergate, the term was adopted as a pejorative to characterize progressive advocacy as performative, self-righteous, or validating rather than practical.

Perspectives on the term are polarized. Those who use the label often do so to criticize what they view as "virtue signaling"—expressing moral opinions to gain social standing rather than to solve problems—or to push back against perceived over-policing of language and culture. Conversely, many regard the term as a dismissive slur used to delegitimize valid concerns about inequality.
