Perspectives on the term are sharply divided. To many internet users, it is a harmless, affectionate synonym for "goofy" or "dorky," particularly when applied to pets making funny faces. However, disability advocates and linguistic critics argue that the term is ableist. They contend that "derpy" relies on mocking physical and behavioral traits historically associated with intellectual disabilities, such as strabismus (crossed eyes) and speech impediments.
