Butthurt is a slang term, often used pejoratively, to describe a state of being overly offended, resentful, or angry, particularly when the reaction is perceived as disproportionate to the cause. Emerging from internet culture in the late 1990s and early 2000s, the term combines "butt" and "hurt" to metaphorically equate emotional distress with physical pain in the buttocks.

Perspectives on the term’s acceptability vary significantly. In many online communities, particularly within gaming culture, it is used casually to mock someone for being a "sore loser" or lacking a thick skin, with users viewing it as a generic synonym for being "salty." However, linguists and social critics often categorize the term as problematic due to its underlying imagery.
