Blue Lives Matter

Blue Lives Matter is a slogan and counter-movement in the United States advocating for the protection of law enforcement officers. The term emerged in late 2014 as a direct response to the Black Lives Matter movement, gaining significant prominence following the fatal shootings of NYPD officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu. It is frequently associated with the "Thin Blue Line" flag and has influenced legislation in several states to classify attacks on police officers as hate crimes.

Perspectives on the term are polarized. Supporters view it as a necessary expression of solidarity with police, arguing that law enforcement is a dangerous profession deserving of respect and that officers are unfairly targeted by public criticism. Critics, however, argue that the phrase co-opts the language of Black Lives Matter to dismiss or undermine concerns regarding police brutality and racial injustice. A primary linguistic objection is that "blue" refers to a chosen profession (a uniform), whereas racial identity is immutable, making the comparison a false equivalency in the eyes of detractors.
